Title:  Digital

Level: Upper Intermediate Students

Main Aims: Students will develop their listening and speaking  skills  by watching a video about Shorthand Language (Emoticons) and talking about the importance of computers in their lives as they listen to the questions in "voicethread". They will also  produce short texts using Emoticons/Shorthand language and interact with other classmates by commenting on their writings.

Place: Mimio Room and at Home

Time: 2 classes (2 days)

Procedures:

First they will see the Voicethread slideshow (made by their teacher, Gabriela Anjos)about the role computers play in their lives and discuss in pairs each of the questions asked. As a Follow-up, they will , at home, record or write comments for some of the questions. On a second class, again in the Mimio Room, they'll listen/read the comments made by themselves and their classmates.

Next, they'll watch the You Tube video about Emoticons (A talk given by the American author, Rives) - a short story told with Shorthand Language. Still in class ,they'll write drafts of the text they will be asked to produce using Emoticons/Shorthand language (an answer to the following question - "Which would you take to a desert island , a computer or a human? Why?") . At home they will write their answers in the Comments space and will also interact with their classmates using the same language. On the second day they'll view all the  comments in the Mimio Room.

Look at the photos and listen to the questions below. Discuss them with a friend.

Do you think you could create one?

Use  Shorthand language to answer this question:

"Which would you take to a desert island for company - a computer or a human ?  Why ?"

A computer or a human ???

Now  interact with your classmates writing COMMENTS on their answers to the same question. Don't forget to use  some Emoticons!
